The Weddings You Remember Are the Ones You Let Happen

Couples spend a year shaping every detail of a wedding, then spend the day itself quietly checking whether it all goes to plan.

The ones who look back and feel they were truly there are almost always the ones who let that checking go. After years of photographing weddings in Europe and the USA, I’ve come to see that the real difference between a day you remember and a day you simply get through is whether the couple stayed inside it. This Sonoma wedding made that easier to witness.

The version of the day you actually keep


The best weddings I’ve been part of share something the guests never notice. So much is being held together out of sight that the couple gets to stop holding anything at all. The photographs that still mean something years later almost always come from those hours, when a couple has quietly handed the worry to someone else and let themselves feel all of it instead. That’s as true at a city courthouse as it is at a private estate, and it’s the whole idea behind a documentary approach to this Sonoma wedding.

Jenny told me before the wedding that her one real fear was feeling pulled in too many directions, unable to soak any of it in. It’s the most common worry I hear from couples, and it’s a fair one. The moment Jenny keeps returning to is a small and unplanned one, her mother and father walking her out of the house and down the stairs toward the ceremony. Nobody staged it, and everyone felt it. That is the kind of moment you only get when a couple trusts the day to carry itself.

What a Sonoma wedding asks of a photographer


My role on a day like theirs is not to direct it. It’s to carry the logistics quietly enough that the couple forgets I’m working, and stay close enough to the genuine moments that nothing of consequence slips past. That is the real craft of a documentary wedding photographer.
